Dual-Core CPU article

Saw an interesting CPU-related post over at /.. There’s a good article over at Anandtech summarizing what’s currently known about near-term dual-core CPUs, along with some of their predictions.

  • yeah, i read that too…looked pretty interesting. kind of bummed, but not too shocked, about them thinking the first dual-core cpus will mostly be two standard cpus stuck together on a single die. i liked that they brought up the coupling of two cpus that aren’t the same in performance and abilities…and saying that’s when it will get really interesting. :)

  • I’m not particularly surprised either. I mean, the dual-core designs appeared on the roadmap pretty suddenly and weren’t all that far off. Figure about the only way they could accomplish that is if they took an already verified core that they were good at building and simply design a small chunk of arbitration logic to allow them to stick two on a die fast enough to bring it to market before they ran out of room to improve the existing designs. Sounds like I may actually get to see how well AMD’s hypertransport links fair in a tightly-coupled multiprocessor system sitting under my desk this way. :)
