Exult – open-source Ultima 7 engine

So recently I’d been thinking a fair bit about how good some old DOS games were back in the day. The ones that really came to mind were the Ultima series (particularly U6: The False Prophet, U7: The Black Gate, and U7: Serpent Isle). Those were outstanding games. I’d done a bit of research and found DOSBox, which allows you to play a wide range of old DOS games on an assortment of platforms (ie it performs x86/DOS emulation).

Once I knew I could potentially get some of my old Ultima games up and running on a modern machine without all the hassle of setting up VMware or something like that with DOS installed and all the headaches in getting Ultima to run natively in DOS, I decided to grab it when I next visited my folks. Ended up going through all my old crap anyway while I was there (which will shortly be dropped off on my doorstep I’ve recently realized). But I digress. Got Ultima 7: The Black Gate up and running on my notebook and realized there are still some minor issues, some with DOSBox and some with the game itself (I’d forgotten just how buggy some of these games were).

Overall it was good. After remembering that you have to save often (and you have to make sure not to tick off Iolo with too much stealing), I ran across Exult, which is actually an open-source Ultima 7 engine that reads from the old U7 data files, but is a completely rewritten engine that runs natively on a number of different platforms (XP, Linux, OSX, etc). Being completely from scratch, it doesn’t suffer from many of the bugs present in the DOSBox/U7 combo, and even introduces a number of nice additional features. It’s made the whole experience substantially more enjoyable. Good stuff!

Zelda delayed :(

How lame! I’ve talked about this game a little previously, and it’s looking pretty oustanding. They’ve gone back to more of a realistic look from the cel-shaded cartoony stuff of Wind Waker. Not that Wind Waker wasn’t cool. But it sounds like it’s getting pushed back from November to some time after next March or so (according to IGN). Man, this was announced back in August. Where was I? I’m really looking forward to this game too. Amanda and I had even preordered it for my birthday. Bummer.

What the… Nintendo’s new controller?

Nintendo’s finally announced the controller for their next-gen console (the Revolution). Does anyone besides me find it bizarre?

Sounds like it’s somewhere between a one-handed tv remote and an old power glove? There are apparently a couple of sensors placed near the tv plus a sensor in the remote that detect position and orientation. They plan on supporting other “more traditional” controller types (conventional controller shells, dance mats, bongos, etc) by slipping the remote inside these other add-ons. One example they have demonstrated:

A traditional thumbstick with a pair of trigger buttons will hook into the bottom of the remote. Nintendo refers to this as the so-called ‘Nunchaku’ configuration (the two bits are connected by a short cord), which may be amusing to anyone familiar with the work of Michelangelo. :)

Apparently their motivation is to differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft, and at the same time open themselves up to a whole new class of gamer. Nintendo has traditionally targetted a younger audience, whereas Sony and Microsoft have largely targetted the 20-something male gamer who grew up on Nintendo’s earlier stuff. This time out, Nintendo’s trying to hit up people like Mom and Grandma by designing an unintimidating controller (since it’ll seem awful familiar to them if they’ve ever used a tv) and a gameplay style to match. But somehow they claim they’ll still find a way to make it a satisfying experience for people who’ve been playing games for years. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. All things considered, I’m REALLY looking forward to the new Zelda game that is slated to come out sometime around the beginning of November!

E3 Highlights

The big E3 entertainment expo featured the first real info on the next generation game consoles. Xbox360 features a PowerPC with 3 cores, graphics by ATI, some backwards compatibility. PS3 features a beastly PowerPC-based Cell processor (ie roughly twice the flops of the Xbox360), graphics by Nvidia, Blu-Ray support, and full backwards compatibility (PS1 and PS2). Very limited details on the Nintendo Revolution: backwards compatible with Gamecube games, support for downloading old school Nintendo games (NES, SNES, N64… not sure how the pricing scheme will work for this). Looks like they’ll all come standard with WiFi, wireless controllers, and I suspect will all have some sort of support for hard drives (PS3/Xbox360 for sure, guess on my part with Revolution since you can download games).

One thing I found particularly amusing: Xbox360 demos were running on a Power Mac G5 (see here and here). I knew the development machines from MS with the Xbox SDK have been Power Macs, but I’m amused the E3 demos aren’t running on prototype hardware.

Zelda trailers

Just tell me this doesn’t look totally awesome!

LEGO Star Wars

So Lego’s working on a video game set in the Lego Star Wars universe (ie Star Wars setting, but stuff is built out of Legos). They have some coverage over at Gamespot, including screenshots. Looks like it should be a pretty cute game, and the initial hands-on demo is impressive.

The Kingdom

So what’ve I been up to recently… I’ve been adventuring in the Kingdom… The Kingom of Loathing that is.

MoH: Pacific Assault

Looks like EA has pushed back the release of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault to some time in November. Guess they’re adding some form of squad control (basic orders like advance, fall back, suppressive fire, etc) and some general polishing.

Duct Tape

Looks like someone heard me. There’s now a mod out there for Doom 3 that attaches a small flashlight to the shotgun and machinegun. Claims to be using Duct Tape.

Doom!

So I’ve been playing Doom 3 off and on most of this week. If you like the Doom series, this is a welcome refresher. The graphics are pretty tight (although I don’t actually have a machine set up that’s fast enough to really crank it up beyond the lowest possible settings… I do have most of the effects like bump mapping and stuff turned on though). Gameplay is pretty much what you’d expect from a Doom game, but I kinda like the combo of the dark environment and having to use a flashlight (which looks pretty damn good). Of course, they like to pounce on you sometimes in really dark areas, which kinda sucks. Can’t really see without the flashlight, and you have to drop that to use a weapon (guess they haven’t seen how the SWAT guys have little flashlights attached to their shotguns). I guess sometimes you can see the enemy by noticing their glowing eyes, but I’m not sure they all glow. I kinda like the PDA system too (you pick up other people’s PDA and sync up to read their email, hear audio logs, and sometimes get codes for storage lockers).

I wish they’d done a more advanced damage model ala Soldier of Fortune. I shoot a zombie in the arm, he flinches in that direction and usually gets a red spot there, but it would be cool if I could blow off limbs and have them keep coming as appropriate. You do get to catch a glimpse of a brain now and then as you blow apart a zombie’s head.

Anyway, if you like the old Doom, and enjoy simply running around shooting the crap out of things, you might give it a look. Story’s nothing all that amazing. Really, I wish I could fight more zombies. Seems like someone could pretty easily come up with a mod for the Night of the Living Dead series or something.
