A couple of weeks ago, we went up to Nashville and hit a number of the sights. I’ll go ahead and split this into two posts, since I’ve only uploaded some of the relevant photos so far. The first day, we hit their recreation of the Parthenon. Apparently, it’s actually the second replica they’ve built, with the first being built in 1897 to celebrate their centennial but it was only built to last 6 months. The locals liked it so much, they elected to rebuild it in a more permanent manner. It now also hosts the city of Nashville’s art museum.

After that, we hit the Frist Center for the Visual Arts to catch their exhibit featuring Monet to Dali (on loan from the Cleveland Museum of Art). The other exhibit featured some of the work of Angelo Filomeno, who does really interesting (if a bit disturbing) embroidery work on large silk panels. From the Frist website, his works feature “embroidered images of fanged skulls, exploded peacocks, and hovering insects.” Strangely enough, that was about all they had. I have to admit we were a bit disappointed overall. We figured there’d be a more substantial art museum in a city the size of Nashville, but we arguably had a better time at the Huntsville art museum (especially given the difference in the price of admission).

Finally, we hit the Lane Motor Museum before heading home. By far the best stop of the day, especially since admission’s only $5 for an adult. I don’t know what Mr. Lane does for a living, but apparently he must do pretty well for him to have accumulated such an impressive selection of unusual autos predominantly from Europe and Japan. The collection includes everything from cars to trikes to motorcycles to a massive US Army LARC and other oddities like the Helicron. All sorts of cool stuff. Go check it out!

So. Was driving along last week and heard a big pow from under the hood. Knew that couldn’t be good, and it continued to make awful sounds, so I immediately pulled over and called for a tow. Tow was pretty uneventful. Just a quick hop across town via the interstate. Went in to take care of the paperwork while the driver unloaded my car. Came back out to find the car still jacked up and with the hood popped up. Apparently, there’d been a fire under the hood while I was inside. After a fire extinguisher and a lot of water, they’d managed to put out the fire. Driver towed it on over away from anything of value and unloaded it. Car started to roll down the slight incline, but it was in park (had been in neutral when it was towed). Not a good sign (you’d think the fire would be enough to tip me off that there were problems afoot). Turns out, towing a vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground… BAD IDEA. Transmission ripped itself apart, metal bits from it shorted out some wiring, which led to the fire.

Suffice it to say, my old ’86 Tercel is now toast. And after I’d finally come up with a name for it too (Fireball). Farewell sweet Fireball, we’ll miss you. At least you went out with a bang instead of a wimper.

Tow company cut me a check for the cost of replacing the transmission (a little more than the Blue Book value if I’d sold it in working condition). I’ve managed to come up with a suitable replacement, an ’01 Honda CR-V. It’s even silver.

Basically, he’s responsible for the monster known as the Cobra (dropping a powerful Ford V-8 into a small/light AC body). Kicked some serious butt in racing for quite a while. After that, he’s done several additional iterations/refinements to the basic Cobra idea and worked with Ford on some more performance oriented versions of their Mustang and so forth. Anyway, ran across this gallery of wallpapers of the Ford Shelby GR-1 Concept. Pretty cool.

So I’ve seen a few of these around and been curious. Finally got around to looking into it, and it turns out Scion is a new subsidiary of Toyota. Basically, Toyota has realized that it may not have to coolest image with the youngfolk and wants to tap that market. They sorta tried with the Matrix, but I’ve mainly seen a slightly older crowd driving them (hi dad!). Guess they figured they needed a new car company to accomplish it. There basically still Toyotas, so you get the same kind of reliability you would from one with their logo on the hood. They’ve also taken cues from Saturn and apparently have gone with the no-hassle approach to sales (here’s the price and that’s that). Looks like they’ve got a total of 3 models at this point, and options are largely limited to “do you want stick or an automatic?” But that’s because just about everything you’d actually want in a car is included in the base price. The most humorous part of it all is the fact that they have all sorts of appearance add-ons that you can get including “sport” mufflers, logoed oil cap s and battery tie downs, LED mood lighting inside the vehicle, etc. Guess they’re shooting for the ricer who’d like to get it all direct from the factory.
