TV I’ve missed

TV on DVD is so very cool. After a recommendation from Lee (not to mention my own curiosity), I rented the first disc of Joss Whedon’s Firefly a few weeks back. Really enjoyed it, so I ended up buying it. Good stuff.

Sticking with the trend, I decided to go rent the first couple of discs for BBC’s MI-5. It had piqued my interest previously, but hadn’t gotten around to looking for it until the recent issue of Wired reminded me. (The Wired/Tired/Expired segment included it as MI-5/Alias/24.) Been enjoying it so far. A bit complicated at times, so I’m guessing I may have to go back and watch some of these episodes again. Anthony Stewart Head (from Buffy fame) even appears in one of the eps.

AK-47 raffle?

Was accosted by a guy on the quad yesterday about the strangest fundraiser I’ve ever seen on a college campus. This guy was selling raffle tickets to win an AK-47… presumably a functional one. Didn’t probe to see if he was raising money for some “cause” or if he just had it lying around and wanted more beer money. Weird!

Zelda trailers

Just tell me this doesn’t look totally awesome!

horatio dual-boot

So I’ve decided to hold off on buying a new PC for the foreseeable future. Have been wanting to put together a new gaming box with a semi-current graphics card so that I could play some games. My old Athlon box, polonius, is a bit long in the tooth, and my notebook, laertes, just doesn’t quite cut it on everything. My Dell box, horatio, is fairly current (P4/2.4GHz) from the clunky video (GeForce 4 MX), but until recently I enjoyed using it exclusively as an always-on Linux box. Since the mini is treating me so well in most of the areas I relied on Linux for, I recently decided to set horatio up as a dual-boot WinXP/Linux box with a decent video card and hold out for buying a new box until I find something that really warrants it.

Picked up an ATI Radeon 9600XT at a price I could live with (quite a bit cheaper than an AGP GeForce 6600GT, and seeing as the box is a few years old anyway I figured it was the better choice). Seems pretty slick so far. Dual-head with one card in WinXP (had been using the GeForce4MX in combination with an old PCI Matrox Millenium in Linux… remains to be seen if I can get dual-head working on the Radeon in Linux), should be peppy enough to game at higher than VGA resolution, and I’m working on shifting some of my other parts to it (250GB HDD, DVD burner, TV tuner). Should make a nice little box when the dust settles. Much quieter than the old Athlon box and should kick out less heat too. Yay for progress (to think I rigged up a RAID of 2 drives to get 40GB back when I set that thing up… now I’ve got more than 5 times that storage in one drive). I’ve got XP installed at this point and am working on setting up Fedora Core 3 (since we’ve moved most of our boxes to that at work… should make working more pleasant since I’m no longer stuck with RedHat 7.3).

Misconceptions: GCC (followup)

Ack! My pants are on fire. Was just perusing the gcc website when I noticed they’re refering to it as the GNU Compiler Collection. Hmm. Wonder if it’s always been that way, or just since they added other languages…

Edit: Dug around their wiki some more. Looks like it used to be GNU C Compiler (at least the initial release was), just as I thought.

Blech… It’s Hot!!!

Wouldn’t think I’d be complaining about how hot it is in winter. Truth be told, it’s ass cold outside. But when I came into the office today it was close to 90 degrees in there! I’ve propped the door open and tried to get in touch with Dan the friendly building manager guy any way possible. I think they’ve tweaked something since it’s started to come down (about 86 now), but it’s taking a while. I actually sat out in the hallway for about an hour waiting for it to cool down enough that I could sit in here. Granted, by cool enough I mean I’ve also taken off my shoes and socks and rolled up my jeans so they look super stylish, but at least I can work at my desk for a moment without passing out now.

Edit: Turns out it’s some building-wide issue with the steam heat… but my office is one of the more obvious ones since we have all these space heaters (read: computers) in here. A quick headcount says there are around 20 machines in this office. Not bad seeing as there are only 8 grad desks in here. And a few tiny undergrad ones that are little more than a monitor stand.
