Looks like someone heard me. There’s now a mod out there for Doom 3 that attaches a small flashlight to the shotgun and machinegun. Claims to be using Duct Tape.

So I’ve been pretty religiously watching The Screensavers on G4/TechTV since I noticed the cable company added it to the lineup. Pretty entertaining show, and they sometimes have some cool bits on there. This past week they had a Best of: Free and Cheap episode detailing a number of free/cheap downloads and tips. I found a couple of segments of particular interest:
- Linksys WRT54G – a lot of the Linksys network hardware runs Linux, and so they’ve had to release the source under GPL. Turns out, there’s a bug in the software for the Linksys WRT54G wireless router (which I just happen to have now) that allows you to drop in arbitrary firmware. So people have started hacking on the source and adding all sorts of other features to the router. They’ve added a variety of things, but one of the more interesting is the inclusion of an ssh daemon. You can now set it up so that you can control it via ssh and transfer files into the ramdisk. As such, you can add in all sorts of stuff like wireless sniffers, network loggers, etc. Haven’t tried it out yet, but looks promising.
- Synergy – when I first heard the blurb about this on the show, I thought it was just going to be a knock-off on VNC. Turns out, it’s even more interesting. Rig up a single keyboad/mouse setup connected to a single computer. Set up monitors on several computers including the one with the keyboard/mouse. Set up Synergy, and you can control all of the computers just like you were using multi-head or something. As you move the cursor off the side of the screen, it pops over onto the desktop for the machine to that side, and you’re now controlling that one. Pretty wild. You can even copy and paste text across the different machines this way. Definitely going to have to check that one out.
So I’ve been playing Doom 3 off and on most of this week. If you like the Doom series, this is a welcome refresher. The graphics are pretty tight (although I don’t actually have a machine set up that’s fast enough to really crank it up beyond the lowest possible settings… I do have most of the effects like bump mapping and stuff turned on though). Gameplay is pretty much what you’d expect from a Doom game, but I kinda like the combo of the dark environment and having to use a flashlight (which looks pretty damn good). Of course, they like to pounce on you sometimes in really dark areas, which kinda sucks. Can’t really see without the flashlight, and you have to drop that to use a weapon (guess they haven’t seen how the SWAT guys have little flashlights attached to their shotguns). I guess sometimes you can see the enemy by noticing their glowing eyes, but I’m not sure they all glow. I kinda like the PDA system too (you pick up other people’s PDA and sync up to read their email, hear audio logs, and sometimes get codes for storage lockers).
I wish they’d done a more advanced damage model ala Soldier of Fortune. I shoot a zombie in the arm, he flinches in that direction and usually gets a red spot there, but it would be cool if I could blow off limbs and have them keep coming as appropriate. You do get to catch a glimpse of a brain now and then as you blow apart a zombie’s head.
Anyway, if you like the old Doom, and enjoy simply running around shooting the crap out of things, you might give it a look. Story’s nothing all that amazing. Really, I wish I could fight more zombies. Seems like someone could pretty easily come up with a mod for the Night of the Living Dead series or something.
